Indoor track posts 18 individual titles at Idaho State-hosted meet
The Utah State University men’s track team went 4-1 and the women’s team went 0-5 at the Idaho State Quintuple Dual meet Saturday in Pocatello, Idaho with USU posting 18 individual finishes in the top five: Fourteen on the men’s side and four on the women’s side.
“We had a lot of good performances,” Head Coach Gregg Gensel said. “We had a good day.”
The men’s team defeated the University of Utah (84-21), Boise State University (75-64), Idaho State University (74-69) and Weber State University (68-67), while narrowly falling to Montana State University (72.5-70.5).
On the women’s side, the Aggies lost to BSU (76.5-62.5), WSU (84-51), ISU (85.5-57.5), MSU (88-53) and Utah (96-44).
Individual first-place finishers on the team were Justin Wickard in the 55-meter hurdles (7.47 seconds), Anthony Stewart in the 200 (22.14), Maurice Jenkins in the pole vault (16’11”), Demario Franklin in the high jump (6’9″) and Candice Workman in the shot put (48’9.5″). In addition, the men’s 4×400 relay won its race.
Wickard and Franklin also went second and third, respectively, in the long jump.
“We’re excited because things are starting to come around and pay off,” Gensel said. “We keep getting better each meet.”
Other top finishers in the meet for the Aggies were Brett Guymon, who took third in the 55 hurdles; Nick Seedal, who earned fifth in the 400; Josh Sides, who took third in the shot put; Tim Sparks, who finished fourth in the shot put and third in the weight throw; Jacob Johnson, who earned third in the pole vault and Robert Crockett, who took fourth in the high jump.
On the women’s team, Katie Farner finished second in the high jump, Shae Bair earned third in the pole vault and Christi Howell took fifth in the 3,000.
Several individuals posted personal records at the meet, including Franklin, Wickard, Sparks, Workman and Howell, Gensel said.
Many Aggies also met qualifying marks for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference meet which will be held in Flagstaff, Ariz., Feb. 22 and 23.
“There were a lot of people who qualified for the conference meet,” Gensel said. “Our plan for the indoor season is working.”
The Aggies will compete next at the Montana State Invitational Feb. 16.
