John Mayer Trio funk it up with ‘Try’

Josh Law

When three extremely talented musicians come together, the music they make is truly candy to the ears.

The John Mayer Trio, in their latest album ‘Try,’ released Nov. 22, combine funk, blues and pop genres to create music that has the soul-funk sound of the Neville Brothers, guitar solos and riffs reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix and unique vocal abilities that can only be characterized by John Mayer himself.

This new album seems to figuratively take John Mayer’s previous work, roll it into a big ball, stuff it into a can and kick it down the street. Not that I really disliked John Mayer before, I just thought his music very predictable with little, to no, contrast between songs.

This new album, on the other hand, combines the talent of Steve Jordan, a drummer and songwriter who has been referred to as, “one of the greatest and most influential drummers of all time” by the magazine Modern Drummer, and Pino Palladino, who has played bass with some extremely influential and talented bands and artists including The Who, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Chaka Khan.

If you have family, friends or lovers this Christmas that love to groove you may want to consider this album. Music is, after all, the second best gift to give at Christmas; great music is the first best gift. For some fun, good, clean, funky music, check out the John Mayer Trio’s “Try.”
