June Star Parties
The Salt Lake Astronomical Society will host three free public star parties this month on Saturday the 9th, Friday the 22nd and Saturday the 23rd, from dusk to 11:00 p.m.
All three events will feature Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. The Moon joins the show on the 22nd and 23rd.
The star parties on the 9th and 23rd will be held at the society’s Stansbury Park Observatory Complex (SPOC). SPOC is located at 15 Plaza in Stansbury Park and can be reached by taking Interstate 80 west from Salt Lake City to the Stansbury / Tooele exit (#99) and then following the signs south, first to Stansbury Park and then to the observatory. Drive time from downtown Salt Lake City is about 35 minutes.
The SPOC star party on the 9th will feature a talk on constellations from 9:30 to 10:00 while the one on the 23rd will include a talk on telescopes from 9:45 to 10:15.
Both SPOC star parties will feature a telescope specifically designed for use by those with disabilities.
The star party on the 22nd will be held in the parking lot of the Harmons grocery store located at 7755 South 700 East in Midvale.
Reservations are not required and groups are welcome. Admission is free.
All events will be held weather permitting.
