Kalai and Sarah Sample return to USU
Two local favorite guitarists and singer/songwriters, Kalai and Sarah Sample, will be performing for one show at the Kent Concert Hall Monday night.
Hawaiian born and raised in Alaska, Kalai has been playing his acoustic guitar and singing for crowds in Salt Lake City and the surrounding area for the past few years, building his reputation amongst soul, folk and acoustic rock fans. He has been compared to Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and Dave Matthews. He has also been a professional fly-tier for fly-fishing outfitters, such as L.L. Bean and Cabela’s.
Kalai headlined the Student Activities Board’s Moonlight and Music at the beginning of fall semester, which brought in a crowd of 2,000 students.
He released his third album, “Rebel Hands,” in 2004. The album includes a handful of musicians including bassist Eric Wallengren, drummer Sneez and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. His other albums include the 2002 release “Six Strings and the Rainy Day Man,” an acoustic project done himself and the 2001 release “Acoustacism,” which brought in other Utah musicians as guest artists.
Kalai will play an acoustic set and will be headlining the concert Monday night.
Sarah Sample, an acoustic guitarist and singer/songwriter, is more than well known in Cache Valley. She has been a regular performer at Utah State University for the past few years. She has been compared to Sarah McLaughlin and Martina McBride.
In September, she filled the Ellen Eccles Theater in Logan for a solo show.
The show will take place at 8 p.m. and tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Taggart Student Center Ticket Office. For more information on either artists, go to kalai.cc or www.sarahsample.com.
