Lacrosse club hits road
The Utah State University men’s club lacrosse team will travel to southwest Colorado to face Fort Lewis College and the Colorado School of Mines Friday and Saturday.
The Aggies will play their first indoor game of the season as they square off against Division I Fort Lewis Friday.
This will be the second meeting between the two teams this season. The first came in the Fall Brawl Tournament played at Utah State in the fall.
Fort Lewis won the hard-fought game.
The score was tied 3-3 at halftime, but the experienced Fort Lewis team pulled it out in the second half.
Friday’s game starts at 7 p.m.
The team will travel to play the Colorado School of Mines Saturday.
Mines, like Utah State, is a Division II team.
The game will start at 1 p.m.
The team will once again be without offensive players Albe Gardner, Jason Lambert, Bert Child and Jon Atwood. All are out for various reasons.
The Aggies have been forced to do two things to compensate for these losses.
First, they have relied heavily on stars Tyler Berkey, Paul Larkin, Jake Morrison and outstanding play from their defenseman, USU goalie James Morrison said.
Of players that are active, Berkey and Larkin have scored 21 of the 32 goals scored this season. Berkey leads the team with 11 goals. He is coming off a 3-goal performance in last weekend’s game against the University of Utah.
“Tyler [Berkey] has really been our workhorse lately,” Morrison said. “He and Brock [Miller] have really carried us offensively.”
Larkin has 10 goals, a strong number for an attackman. Larkin also serves as team president.
Morrison is the leading goalie in Division II with a .803 save percentage.
When asked if the defense has had to step up their game with all of the offensive losses, Morrison said it was an understatement.
“Our defense has played extremely well,” he said. “We have to play well.”
The team will then return home for a showdown with Division I leader and in-state rival BYU on April 13.
