Lady Ags continue to roll
Danyelle Snelgro scored her 1,000th USU career point Thursday night in the Spectrum as the Lady Aggies rolled to victory against the San Jose State Spartans 62-51.
Snelgro roped in 13 points for the night to put her USU career total at 1,109. She is only one of seven lady Aggies to score more than 1,000 points in her USU career, but said she didn’t even know it was coming until after she scored. With 1:23 left in the first half when she managed to intercept the ball, regained possession of it and took it the length of the floor to the hole to put it in.
“I wish it could be a team achievement, and not have just one name attached to it,” Snelgro said of her 1,000th point, “but it’s a big accomplishment.”
Coach Reagan Pebley gave lots of praise to Snelgro for a great, team-oriented college career that will come to an end within the next few weeks. Pebley said WNBA scouts have been watching Snelgro, and that she has been invited to participate in the largest unofficial combine for the women’s professional league that will take place in conjuction with the final four.
“It’s good to see good things happening for her,” Pebley said. “She knows she is as good as her team. She is able to take advantage of the team defensive effort and benefit from it. She is a total team player.”
Snelgro used her defensive prowess to help the Aggies force 23 turnovers in this game. Pebley said the team had a goal of 25 turnovers, but just came up short.
“We knew we had to win at the defensive end,” Pebley said. “It was awesome. We didn’t quite achieve our goal, but I’ll take the 23.”
A big part of the defensive effort of the team came from the Aggie posts. Lydia Whitehead and Nicole Johnson combined for six of the team’s seven blocks, five of which came from Johnson alone. Johnson especially made her strong presence felt especially at the end of the game when it was on the line.
This win puts USU in a four-way tie for third place in the WAC standings along with Idaho, Boise State and Nevada. The Lady Ag’s will finish up their season this Saturday in part one of a women’s-men’s double-header when they play No. 1 ranked Fresno State in the Spectrum before heading to Reno for the WAC tournament.
