LETTER: Act will not decrease diversity

Dear Editor,

The idea to crack down on residency for higher education is a sensational idea.

Everyone on this campus knows there are too few facilities, programs, opportunities and funding for the number of students attending this school. Requiring more money from out-of-state students seems like a logical place to start in remedying this growing problem. To think this bill will have any effect on decreasing campus diversity is a ridiculous idea.

Utah state is never going to be a diverse campus due to the predominant culture. It is not the responsibility of the universities of this state to provide an education/dating-service for every college-aged Mormon in this country.

If out-of-state students decide not to come to Utah, who cares? There will be more educational opportunities for us who actually pay taxes here. What’s better anyway, educating numerous amounts of students who had no funding and no opportunities, or less-well-funded, better-educated students to find jobs in an increasingly competitive world?

The question is quantity vs. quality. If Utah State was better funded and offered more opportunities and smaller class sizes, diversity would take care of itself by attracting students who actually wanted a quality education and not just a date.
