LETTER: ASUSU–no responsibility

Editor,

I just received the news that ASUSU trashed its decision to go with 100-percent post-consumer paper in computer labs and opted to for a mere 30 percent. I want to be the first to congratulate them in setting a great precedent for USU students. I will make sure this week that I do a full 30 percent of my homework and give 30 percent of my very best toward upcoming midterms.

Is this the level of commitment that the university has toward its students’ concerns and efforts to be proactive toward reducing the impact of thousands of students on their environment? I understand that the leading argument for upgrading to only 30-percent post-consumer paper is due to quality concerns and maintenance cost. Well if the best interest of the students really mattered, ASUSU would have done its homework and lifted the wool the computer labs are pulling over its eyes.

Numerous universities and corporations have committed to 100-percent post-consumer paper without an ounce of regret or added maintenance costs. If there really were added cost to maintaining computer equipment, I will be the first to belly up some spare change to reduce my impact as a student.

But in the spirit of ASUSU’s decision, tomorrow I will coat only 30 percent of my armpits with deodorant, shave only 30 percent of my face, and clean only 30 percent of the dishes in my sink.

I’m sorry folks, but being responsible for only 30 percent of the impact created by this university is completely unacceptable and there is no real reason why USU cannot be proactive toward its environmental responsibility.
