LETTER: Cheers, not jeers, at games

To the editor:

I am glad someone has finally commented on the ridiculous jeering that takes place at the basketball games. I find it offensive and detracting from the game.

What happened to good ol’ cheers to encourage the home team? It seems as though the majority of the crowd’s chanting is lead by some cynical group of jeerleaders found in the stands. Since when was Aggie pride synonymous with degradation and belittlement? Is this what we’re learning to take with us into the real world?

I’m disgusted about the example we’re setting for future generations of Aggie fans. Essentially, we’re supporting the idea that if you want to get ahead in life, highlight all the faults of your opponents, trample on their reputation and heritage, and do anything else possible to destroy their self-confidence. If that doesn’t work, blame the officials for not having their own personal Eye of Providence, but by no means take personal responsibility for your short-comings.

I say props to Dru and everyone else that expect decency and common courtesy of their fellow students no matter where they are, even in the Spectrum.
