LETTER: Columnist rants are getting old
To the editor:
I wish to write in response to the ever increasing number of opinion columns which are as useless as they are unoriginal. On Wednesday we heard yet another rant by Mr. Adams. I wish I could say that for once I was gathering something new from this, but as usual I didn’t. Is it because he was telling me things that I would rather stick my head in the sand about? No. It was because, even though I am no longer a student, he hasn’t changed the lines I heard while at USU or UNL.
My response to his claim of our expressed apathy is that he needs to open his eyes. He needs to realize that what the American people want is someone who can give them solutions to the problems. We may have become apathetic, but it is to the soapbox yeller, not the issues.
It reminds me of scene I witnessed in DC shortly after 9/11. Protestors who had come for a WTO meeting (which had been canceled due to the attack) had decided to do an anti-war protest in the streets of a town that had just watched a plane strike it. These protesters, who were hooded and masked, began to burn an American flag.
I do not question the rights of assembly of protest. I may be disgusted with those who feel that screaming and waving signs on the streets is the only way to get things accomplished, but it is their right to a point. And to Mr. Adams, your column might be better in that realm than this. What we want now are options. Solutions. Ideas to make the country a bit better for the rest of us.
If you feel Hillary Clinton is the best candidate for Utah, then explain to the ranchers her plan to help private farms with tax breaks and supports. If you feel Barack Obama is the best, tell the students about how he plans to increase the BLM land. These are the things that people need to know.
The time for half measures and mudslinging are over. People who truly want to help FIX this country need to step up and give solutions to problems. We already know what is wrong. Give the options, and let us pick the solutions.
