LETTER: Don’t send spam e-mails

Dear Editor,

Yesterday I and probably every Utah State University student received an e-mail from tickets@cc.usu.edu about a game. This e-mail was unsolicited and was sent not only to cc.usu.edu users, but other e-mail addresses were harvested from the World Wide Web.

This is an abuse of the possession of student information on USU’s part and also an abuse of network services. If USU Athletics wants to send reminders or announcement e-mails about games, they should set up a mailing list where interested parties could sign up. They should not “spam” the entire student body.

This can become common practice if we don’t speak up, so I invite all that dislike such practices to e-mail abuse@usu.edu to voice disagreement.
