LETTER: Dru Brown does not suck

To the editor:

Spring Semester brings yet another long round of classes, studying and homework. On top of all that, Logan enters subzero temperatures, keeping most students indoors. There is only one force that is strong enough to tempt Utah State students out of their heated apartments…Aggie basketball.

The magic generally found within the Spectrum was shattered on Thursday evening when Utah State students crossed the line of decency as they attacked fellow student Dru Brown during the Boise State/Utah State game. It is time to take a stand in his defense, and in defense of the reputation of our school. During the game, students seated in sections E and F in the first few rows held up a sign that said, “Dru Brown, you suck.” This sign was in retaliation to the letter that Dru wrote to the editor of The Statesman on Wednesday, Jan. 17. In this letter, he expressed his concern for the derogatory chants yelled during basketball games. After the poster was removed by security, these same people began chanting insulting remarks at Dru until they were again told by security that this was unacceptable. We hope that these students are proud of themselves for degrading a very admirable person; what does it take to realize that you should be above these insults?

First and foremost, Dru Brown is outstanding! The poster degrading his was uncalled for, rude and very wrong.

We fully support the letter Dru wrote to the editor and we also agree that the derogatory comments yelled at the opposing teams during basketball games are vile; Utah State deserves behavior better than this.

With all of this being said, what puzzled and disappointed us the most was at the end of the game, these same people who where chanting against Dru were awarded the ‘Fans of the Game’! How is it possible that these people, who were the most degrading of all the fans, were given this award? There were others more deserving of this recognition. It’s time for this nonsense to stop!
