LETTER: Fans should cheer, not bash
Editor,
After most of the fans had left the Spectrum on Saturday night, I was lucky enough to help set up a live interview for a Salt Lake TV station with a couple of Aggie players. I never heard the questions that were asked to Spencer Nelson and Jaycee Carroll, but I did hear their answers. They were good answers. They were the right answers. They were honest answers. Spencer plainly said that the loss was going to sting for a couple of days, but there would be other games to play. Jaycee admitted that a young team will sometimes make mistakes and not play a complete 40 minutes. Nelson and Carroll didn’t go on TV and say anything about how the refs were responsible for the team’s loss. They didn’t have anything negative to say about the Pacific Tigers.
In contrast, the fans apparently thought it was the refs and the Tigers who had somehow wronged the Aggies.
How dare those players from Pacific actually try to win! I can’t believe they didn’t just give up. After all, with derogatory comments being made throughout the game about some of the players, coaches and referees, I’m surprised we didn’t see a repeat of the Pacers/Knicks fiasco that happened a month ago.
I hope that the next game Aggie fans attend it will be with a lot more respect than the last. I hope the Big Blue Crew will return to cheering for the home team and not bashing on everyone we face. That is not what real fans do. Real fans cheer loud and bring signs that will help their team win. I guess that is the purpose of being there. Fans are there to help their team win. But when the fans’ actions cast an ugly shadow over their team’s accomplishments, they are in part responsible for the loss the team takes. If you are going to be the sixth man, help your team or don’t be a part of it. Come to the games. Have fun at the games. Yell a cheer instead of a jeer. Show some Aggie pride.
