LETTER: Funds should go to S. Utah now
Editor,
I have noticed that the effort to raise money for the tsunami victims has spread through the doors of the Taggart Student Center. My heart goes out to all of the endless victims that have suffered through this incredible disaster, but my heart also bleeds for those at the bottom of my state that have also suffered a great loss.
I just spent this past weekend in St. George visisting the flood sites. What I saw with my own eyes was more powerful than any news camera could portray. Houses still hanging over a mud cliff waiting for their chance to meet their architecture doom. Piles of personal belongings lodged in the remains of the river that once rose. Where a cul-de-sac once stood, is no more, and a front door left standing where if you were to walk through, you’d fall straight down to the Santa Clara river.
Why aren’t we raising money for them? They are left without a house, a lot to even rebuild on, personal belongings, but still have a mortgage to pay. These people need our financial support even more. They don’t have the world’s support pouring in, but need attention as well. I just feel that the little tsunami fund raising stand in the TSC should take a back seat while we help our fellow Utahns.
It would be a remarkable way for us to show our support and to help them know they have not been forgotten.
