LETTER: It’s all just opinions

Editor,

I wrote in after the Coming Out Day article and I’m now writing again. I can’t speak for the other guy who wrote on Oct. 16, but I have nothing against homosexuals. It’s the article I don’t like.

Cy Martz implied I said homosexuality isn’t OK. The key word is “imply.” I never said what was right or wrong, I simply asked a question that (after an article and four letters) has not yet been answered. “Who has the final word on what is OK and what is not OK?”

So I’ll answer it now: It’s a matter of opinion.

I don’t hate gays. That may seem crazy to you, but one of my former co-workers was gay and I thought highly of him. He was similar to everybody else except he had one preference many people don’t. What I wrote against was (unlike Polynesians or blacks or other racial minorities who fought for equality) the Coming Out Day article was based purely on preferences and opinions of a small minority.

Whether you are homosexual or not is a preference, and writing an article about a group based solely on a different preference seems unfair unless you write about other groups also based on opinions, like the Green Party for example. If I also saw an article about a political party or another club at USU on the front page, I wouldn’t have cared so much.

In response to Safiyyah Ballard’s comment that I “obviously envy” gays, thanks for telling me what I think. And in response to other letters telling me not to hate gays – I can have my own opinion, be it admiration or hatred. You all say to respect homosexuals and show tolerance, yet you are all not tolerating my opinion about the article.

Krzysztof Bzymek even wrote that “hopefully [they are] not a majority of people here.” But I will not assume to know what Krzysztof Bzymek thinks, and anyone who reads this shouldn’t assume or imply what anyone else thinks. However, I would like to clue this person in that a good majority (nearly 70 percent in some books) consider themselves LDS in Utah. Krzysztof Bzymek also wrote “I’m exercising my right to have my opinion” after nearly 350 words of bashing other people and their opinions.

I also have my opinion about the editor and staff of The Statesman, and I think they are doing a good job at getting us to read their paper.
