LETTER: LDS and Greek can work

To the editor:

I really appreciate the comments by Lance Brown in the article written by Candice Sandness. I am also LDS and, although I am not the elder’s quorum president, I am active and a return missionary. I am the vice president of the Sigma Chi fraternity and deal with stereotypes every day. Other LDS people, including my family, question how I can be in a fraternity and still be a “good Mormon.” At the same time, non-LDS people ask me why so many Mormons are closed-minded and judgmental. I wish I could squash all stereotypes and false rumors right now on both sides. That would be an impossible task, so I would just like to shed a little light on what kind of people are both LDS and Greek. M. Russel Ballard, Russel M. Nelson and Joseph B. Wirthlin are all members of the Sigma Chi fraternity. So if you don’t think a “good Mormon” can be Greek, you might want to consider who those men are. Also, to the non-LDS, please don’t generalize Mormons because these are three of our leaders and they teach acceptance and tolerance. I would like to ask both groups, Greek and LDS, to not judge the entire group based on one person’s actions or the “horror stories,” but off what each organization stands for. Oh, and all of you business students can thank another Greek: Jon Huntsman Jr. is also a Sigma Chi and he seems to be an OK guy.
