LETTER: Liberalism 3100: required course

To the editor:

From reading Liberalism 1010 you may get one of two ideas. First, liberals don’t actually have a solution to social problems other than blaming conservatives. Second, if they do have a solution, it’s blaming conservatives. I promise that in Liberalism 3100 you can expect more than that.

Now that the premise has been introduced lets talk about the real subject, public education. I think the best analytical approach in this case will be to compare and contrast.

Conservative: Conservatives, at least if they are in line with their president, want more accountability. They see federal regulations and standards as the way to enforce this. All schools that receive federal money must report. Conservatives would rather not increase funding for teachers or schools, but instead are looking into ways to provide vouchers for private schools.

Liberal (My View): The liberal view as you might guess is nearly the opposite. Increasing spending on teacher pay, math, science, and literacy programs, along with reducing class size will vastly improve our education system. Liberals want people to put their money where their mouth is and actually commit to a better education system for all our children. Privatization of K-12 education will benefit the elite few while the majority of America’s children would go without decent education.

Liberalism 1010: More sex, more money, and less mythology.

As much as we like sex, in a nation falling behind the world in public education, I think that science, math, and reading should get mentioned slightly before better sex ed.

I want liberals and conservatives at USU to know that liberal policies are intellectually and morally appealing to more than just sexually active teenagers. Don’t take it from me; my suggestion-read some books or take a few PoliSci classes, because when it comes to Liberalism 1010 you really do get what you pay for.

Class dismissed.
