LETTER: Library may not be right just yet

Editor,

Friday’s paper shows an artist’s illustration of the new Merrill Library. New facilities can be exciting, but we should not get so excited about it that we accept the design without thought. The illustration shows too much glass with the wrong orientation. This will cause high summer cooling costs and high winter heating costs. Is this the legacy a university should leave for the future? Wouldn’t it be a tribute to architectural creativity if the same ambiance of openness and spaciousness was achieved with a more energy efficient design? This should be addressed now before design plans solidify.
