LETTER: Losing straw bales a start

Dear editor,

I’d always thought the straw bales at the bottom of Old Main Hill were there for personal safety. They might hurt more than say a plastic net, but they beat the feel of a steel grill to the head.

Apparently I was mistaken. Liability is the real issue at stake here, and the signs informing people of potential danger are no longer sufficient in this regard.

While the straw bales were the first to go, the hand rails and concrete stairs must logically follow. How long till some reckless snowboarder brains him(her)self on the rails, or some brash youngster slips and tumbles all the way down the stairs to a bloody death?

We must rip up and dispose of (somewhere) all the concrete, and blow up (both) the heating plant(s). None of us can afford to be held liable for our own creations and actions, can we?
