LETTER: Men don’t owe women

To the editor:

I was appalled by Emma Tippetts’ article, “Extinction of a Man’s Man.” I find it ludicrous that she would suggest that men are expected to pay for dates and to essentially lavish time, resources and attention on women they don’t even know yet. Isn’t dating a phase of getting to know each other to see if you would make a good match? Why should men be saddled with all of the financial burdens that process entails?

Tippetts basically suggests that if a woman is physically attractive, then a man owes her for having the privilege of being seen with her! Should we automatically assign value to strange women based on their genetic makeup? Where does this leave average-looking women? Or should less attractive females be obligated to pay since men are not competing for them? Some old fashioned ideas, like charity and good will, should remain constant. Others, like knights and princes, no longer exist because they belong in the past.
