LETTER: Merrill Library still being planned

Editor,

I want to thank Steve Flint for his letter of Oct. 11 expressing interest in the Merrill Library replacement project, and assure him and your readers the energy efficiency of the new building is of particular interest to those involved in its design.

The facilities program calls for energy efficient and environmentally friendly technologies such as the use of natural light, solar energy, and natural and recycled/recyclable materials. Working with the architects, the staffs of the library and Facilities will seek sustainable (i.e., “green”) solutions to save energy and costs while assuring a safe, functional and aesthetically pleasing environment for library users.

The image depicted in The Statesman on Oct. 4 is a conceptual drawing to help state agencies and the university community visualize the building and its placement on the site. The rendering does not represent an actual design.

Currently, architects are in the process of designing the building; a lot of thought and work remains before arriving at a final design.
