LETTER: Morals shouldn’t be forced

Editor,

A situation seems to be brewing in our country that is incredibly frightening. It was shown by our last presidential election in which many voted based on their moral and religious values. Maybe I see this issue because I have grown up in Utah where the religious majority makes laws that enforce their morals on all. I am not sure if people are aware, but this country was founded on a colony of people seeking religious freedom and fleeing political situations that were governed by the religious values of the majority. It frightens me to see a country of freedom and choice heading in a direction where those freedoms and choices are taken away due to religious beliefs.

I am not trying to say that one religious belief is wrong and another is right. All I am saying is that the beliefs of all should be respected instead of trampled. For example, two of the larger issues today are gay marriage and abortion. Many religions are firmly against these and that is their opinion/belief, but remember that that doesn’t mean those views should make their way into politics and become law. I hope we can reach an understanding that regardless of belief we are a country of choice, freedom, understanding and liberty.

Just because you believe something doesn’t mean you should enforce your belief on the rest of the population. After all, in Christianity, going against those beliefs makes you a sinner and possibly destined for hell.
