LETTER: Newspaper fraught with mistakes
Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my disgust about the errors that are found in every issue of The Utah Statesman. I have read high school newspapers that make fewer mistakes.
For example, I was looking forward to attending the last home basketball game on Saturday night. I picked up the Friday issue of the Statesman to see what time it was at. The Backburner stated that the game started at 7:05. On the sports page, (Down the Line – USU schedule), it stated that the game was at 7. My husband and I arrived at the Spectrum at 6:55. We were just in time to hear the final buzzer and the Aggie fight song – the game had started at 5:00. Thanks, Statesman.
Friday’s issue is no different than most other issues. Countless times I have gone to a certain page to read the conclusion of an article I was interested in only to find that it was not continued on that page at all (for example, the article on the presidents debate).
Just last week I was interviewed for an article in the Statesman. I told the reporter that I was a co-chair of the activity with another student – I even spelled her name for them. However, when the article was printed there was no mention of my co-chair. There are also many times that I see a small “We regret the error” paragraph at the bottom of a page because important information has been left out of an article. Can’t you get it right the first time?
My advice to the Statesman is this: If you can’t get the news right, then don’t report it! I will continue to pick up issues of The Utah Statesman. At least I’ll still have something to start the fire in my wood-burning stove with.
