LETTER: Paper becoming a bully pulpit
Editor,
Two recent debates listed on this page have moved me from annoyed to upset. I will only briefly mention them as they are symptoms of a larger issue. To the persons responsible for the add portraying pant-wetting alcoholics; have you ever had a drink? Are you experienced with alcohol? Are those of us who imbibe it all alcoholics? Are we all bad people? If you are going after alcohol, I suggest you go after similar issues like obesity. I’d take $15 to let you photograph me stuffing my face with quarter-pound cheeseburgers. It will help pay for my quadruple bypass.
To the gentleman worried that the world became gay while he was on his mission. Please reference the passages in the bible and Book of Mormon concerning god being jealous of unauthorized persons judging in his stead, not to mention the compassionate life of Jesus hanging with such persons as you describe. Do you hang out with any gay people or do you hang out with like minded persons who do not threaten your point of view? I think the gay community on campus should find out who this guy is and tell him how cute he looks every time they see him. Not that they need my help.
I believe the Statesman is becoming a bully pulpit for conservative values. There are much better things to do than attack gays, Mormons, alcoholics, hippies or whatever. We should be trouncing politicians who lie and professors that are poor teachers. We should be trouncing the horrible art that is being displayed in the campus gallery. We should be celebrating our academic achievements and recommending everyone check out the incredible food at the Indian restaurant just off campus. We should be debating business ethics and trying to figure out how to be more environmentally minded without destroying our economy. There are better things to say and I am sure such articles are being submitted. I wish the editor would print them.
