LETTER: Recruit local players

To the editor:

Ok its about time we talked about some real issues with our football program, and I am going to start with the meat of it. This isn’t a Utah State Team! If we look just this year at all the recruiting that has been done this off season we see one main theme, TEXAS and CALIFORNIA.

That’s right folks and let me ask you this question. Do really think that we can get starters or even second string guys that are good to come all the way up here from those states? It should be obvious to you that there is no way we can get good quality guys to come up to Logan. So why do our football coaches think that guys not good enough to play in there own states, or anywhere in between are better then our starters that we have up here.

Lets put this in perspective, we had two high schools in our own valley win state championships last year (Mtn. Crest, and Logan). Why is it that we really only got one player from both those teams? Riley is a good quarterback from Logan High who set a ton of records for passing yards and touchdowns last year. Were are the receivers and tight ends that caught all those passes? Why won’t our coaches even look at all the high school starters around our state and the neighboring states?

At least our basketball program doesn’t discriminate against our region. I know that if we would take a look at all our local and regional talent we could actually win some and play like a 1A team. This would up attendance from all the local people and family. This would bring pride back into our program that those that come from those “better” states don’t know anything about. I for one think that our starters and players here in Utah and Idaho and the surrounding states are far better then third stringers from anywhere else!
