LETTER: Right to bear arms

Editor,

In less than one week, the state of Maryland has witnessed the devastating shootings of 8 people, including the shooting of a 13-year-old outside his middle school, rendering him in critical condition.

These kinds of events cause us to stop and ask ourselves: “What the heck is going on?!” How truly effective are the gun control laws of the state of Maryland that are some of the most strict in the nation? Maryland ranks No. 4 in violent crime in the nation.

The state of Maryland asks its residents to give up their guns and rely on the government for protection. How does disarming citizens deter criminals? Is it working? Should the anti-gun agenda of Maryland be applied to the rest of the country? Or should an individual’s Second Amendment rights be promoted and infringing laws be done away with?

Colorado sheriff Bill Masters, who tells the residents of San Miguel County, Colo., over which he presides, “It is your responsibility to protect yourself and your family from criminals. If you rely on the government for protection, you are going to be at least disappointed and at worst injured or killed.”

Come explore the meaning of “the right to keep and bear arms” with the “Students of the Second Amendment” club. We will be having a speaker Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Agricultural Science Building, Room 202.
