LETTER: Ringing phone a bigger threat than guns on campus

Dear Editor,

The Utah Safe to Learn Safe to Worship Act recently promoted by the College Democrats is not necessary.

From what I understand of it, this act would prohibit guns on school campuses and at church. Is this really a problem? And would an act such as this have prevented such tragedies as Columbine from happening?

It seems to me that if someone who has a screw loose decides to shoot up a campus or church he or she is just going to do regardless of the law.

Passing this act would be like an advertisement to would be killers: “Do your shooting here. Nobody is armed and you will have free reign until the cops arrive.”

While I believe the people who are trying to pass this act truly have good intentions, the act itself is a bad idea. It may feel good to “do something” and “make a difference,” but in the end we will have the same threat of violence and a little less individual liberty. Is it really worth it?

Give me an act prohibiting ringers on cell phones at school and church. I will sign it.
