LETTER: Saving seats is way over-done

Editor,

Last Thursday, the Student Activities Board (STAB) in conjunction with Homecoming graciously hosted two wonderful showings of “The Pirates of the Caribbean.” I attended the 9 p.m. showing with four of my friends. After waiting calmly in line to enter the Kent Concert Hall for about 10 minutes, we were finally able to get in. STAB crowd control was well-organized to thwart late comers’ efforts to secure better positions in line, and to check tickets as we entered the hall.

Once inside though, chaos was rampant. It appeared to me and the other 300 standing people that good seating was still available in the lower middle sections. As we made our way to vacant seats we were quickly informed they were saved. Emotions were getting hot as frustrated people shoved pass me, cursing they couldn’t find a seat. One guy was saving eight seats for his eight dates who hadn’t arrived yet. Another girl was on her cell phone asking, “Where are you guys, I’m saving you seats … Smithfield?” Yea, they were going to make it on time all right. I spotted a completely empty row with one guy standing in it. He arrogantly told me the whole row of 20 seats was reserved for the Service Center. Apparently, he was just wearing the service T-shirt that night. Movies are enjoyed more in the company of friends I agree but also think it’s a little ridiculous to save more than three or four seats. Thanks, STAB, for hosting a great movie.
