LETTER: Stand behind Aggie sports

Editor:

I would like to begin by saying I am by no means a Ute fan. In fact I have been attending Aggie football games for more than 20 years. However I was somewhat troubled reading the Statesman article about the Utes leaving an immature image in Logan. It’s true that the Utah football team gathered in front of their fans after the game. The players were cheering for the fans. Instead of being immature I feel this was a very classy thing to do. It showed that the team appreciated the fans making the trip to the game. It united the team and the fans. It showed respect and school pride. The article reported that the stadium announcer repeated plead for them to leave the stadium. This was not the case. The announcer simply asked them to stay off the field.

I felt ashamed as I looked across the field into the east stands and saw more Ute Red then Aggie Blue. This is our home field! As students we should not be letting this happen. As I watch other college football games around the country I see student sections with EVERYONE wearing their school colors. Why can’t that happen here? We have all been given the chance to purchase inexpensive Aggie T-shirts. Wear them.

Football is a sport steeped in tradition. Some teams with more then others. I understand our team is struggling but this is no reason not to support them. Instead of crying over other schools so called “immature” traditions its time to live up to our own Traditions here at Utah State. If we don’t have any then its time to start some. Instead of three-fourths of students leaving the game by the third quarter, let’s show our team that we as students support them. When the visiting team comes to our house lets show them that win or loose we will stand behind our Aggies.
