LETTER: Themes don’t help diversity

Dear Editor,

I was angry when I learned about this new idea called Theme Housing. Theme Housing is reserving buildings often exclusively to those with the same major or background.

I find the idea of Theme Housing very ridiculous. What is great about the whole college experience is that you can come up here and live with people who have different ideas and interests than you. It’s called diversity.

I love having four or five roommates with different majors. I learn about new subjects, people and ideas. In Utah it’s hard enough to find diversity. Why make it harder for people to find it?

It seems to me that people with the same major see enough of each other in their classes. They can form study groups, and they can meet together whenever they want without having to live with each other. People of the same major can choose to live with each other without the aid of Housing, and they can still keep that element of diversity.

Theme Housing has become a burden for some who want to live on campus. Students are capable of forming their own social groups and communities. We don’t need Housing to do it for us.
