Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
In Friday’s issue of “The Utah Statesman” (Oct. 28, 2005), I noticed that in the section entitled “Diversions” (page 5), you and your staff apparently claim that All Saints Day is a “Bizarre Holiday.” I’m just a little curious of your view on this one, but what exactly makes a holiday like All Saints Day rank right up there with Look for Circles Day in the bizarre category? I don’t know if this was a typo or if there are just a significant number of people who don’t know what this holiday is around here, but there is nothing bizarre about All Saints Day. I really wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the latter option, however, considering almost everyone up here thinks I have a smudge on my forehead when they see me on Ash Wednesday.
All Saints Day, if anyone is wondering, is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics and celebrated by many other Christians as well. It is a feast day for all Christian saints for honoring and remembering them and for their intercession on our behalf. All I’m trying to say is this: you can think it’s bizarre because that is your opinion, but do me a favor and don’t degrade one of my religious holidays to the same level as something like Deviled Egg Day by publishing it in this way. If you and your staff didn’t understand what this holiday was before, for future reference, find out what something actually is before you publish a message that you probably didn’t mean to send to the reader; especially those that involve religion.
