Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
I would like to thank Carrie Drake (letters, 11/16/2005) for raising a valid point and taking the trouble to inform the readers that the university honors requests from students for removing questionable phrases from their diplomas, following which, I have now submitted my request to the appropriate authorities. With due respect to the followers of the majority faith in this university and in the r est of America, practicing Hindus like me prescribe to a different manifestation(s) of the Lord than the one mentioned on my diploma. There are people who justified the inclusion of the phrase on grounds of culture, etc and dismissed these legitimate concerns as “petty” (letters, 11/21/2005). Even if the phrase must remain in the diploma in order to accommodate their desires, the university could at least let all graduating students in each semester know (through official channel) that the option to exclude this phrase exists.
