Letter to the Editor: Charges for ASUSU activities are a concern

Editor,

I am concerned when students pay continually increasing fees to ASUSU and then continue to pay for activities that are sponsored by ASUSU, therefore, paid for by student fees. Why do we have to pay twice! For example: Mardi Gras cost $3 this year, when it’s been free for students for the past 4 years. Let’ make a Deal still cost me $2 during Traditions week and I showed up with only 30 min. remaining. They even ended with multiple prizes still to giveaway, but instead returned them to Walmart to save money.

Why would we have to pay for these activities when ASUSU decided to cancel the Homecoming dance to “better budget for events that students will attend” or save money. And the Howl? Yes, it was well attended and there were fewer problems, and ASUSU got our money once again, but not all of it. When you limit purchasing power to only USU students you also limit who gets the money. I know one person that scalped tickets to non-USU students and made $400, also many others that made at least $20 on sales. As a former ASUSU VP, I know the responsibility and capabilities and truly I am frustrated in these decisions that have been made. This week is elections and I encourage all readers to challenge these new officers to truly have our best interest in mind.

Also, I would like to publicly Thank the Kappa Delta Sorority for sponsoring Star*Search. This was an event that is held every year to help raise awareness and donations to “Prevent Child Abuse America” and Cache Valley’s “Child and Family Support Center.” I am writing because I noticed the Statesman was not present and or there has been no coverage. On behalf of the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp): Thanks again Kappa Delta for continuing traditions and supporting charities that can really make a difference. Thanks to all those who attended and we look forward to next year.
