Letter to the Editor: Many of us passengers in metaphorical car

Apparently Spencer Taylor (the College Republicans’ president) is unaware that he and many of the rest of us are passengers in Joshua Der’s metaphorical car (2/6/06 Statesman Opinion). Many whites seem unaware of the effects of past and current racism as we enjoy the benefits of our privilege (knowingly or not).

In a state with a racist legacy manifested in overwhelmingly white demographics, attacking affirmative action should be the last priority, while working together to right the ship should be the first.
