Letter to the Editor: Unrepaired dance floor causing student injuries
Editor,
Last October a school club held an initiation in the Theatre Department’s dance studio. This act was not cleared throught the Theatre Department. The students brought in candles, muusic stands, and wore street shoes; all of which severely damaged the dance floor. The police were called and a report was filed. There was $4,000-5,000 of damage done. The school is now refusing to repair the floor. Their solution is either to place 215 pieces of tape on the floor to cover the gouges, or to teach the dance classes in the HPER.
The tape is hazardous and has caused, and will continue to cause injuries. The HPER floor can not accomadate tap dancing. Students in the Theatre Department recently signed a petition to have the floor repaired. This petition and the students concerns were quickly dismissed and ignored when presented to the Dean. By doing this he is ignoring the students safety. One has to wonder what the schools course of action would be if the football field or basketball court were vandalised. The athletes shouldn’t and wouldn’t be asked to play on an unsafe surface, so why should the theatre students be forced to dance on one?
I hope this letter will bring this matter to broader attention and the proper course of action will finally be taken.
