LETTER: Tuition is high enough
In response to the article about raising the Utah State University tuition level anther 9 percent, all I can say is take another piece of my heart. Tuition has increased every year. Small increases would be normal, but I’m beginning to feel I have a leech stuck to my wallet. I feel the need to point out that while USU pays it’s professors less than other schools, Logan tends to be a place of decreased salaries in general. I think a fair comparison between us and other universities should be based on the percentages of the annual income students have to spend for tuition costs.
I’m all for giving our professors and USU employees their fair share of the pie, but I can’t help but think the money could be saved in other ways. Like quite building new houses for the president every two years. I fear that those who will be hurt the worst are those who are just struggling to work and stay in school at the same time.
If you don’t think that number is very high then take a survey of how many students have made a habit of selling their plasma every two weeks just to afford groceries. I suspect that no amount of complaining will help, however, and despite student protests, the increase will be pushed through anyway. To all the students who are worried about the increasing cost of education, I would suggest you look into selling a kidney – next year blood just ain’t gonna cut it.
