LETTER: Uninsured are out of luck
Editor,
We all have sympathy for those whose cars were damaged, but it is not at all clear that USU is responsible for the loss. Tornadic-type winds caused damage throughout northern Utah. Under such conditions, all kinds of materials are swept up and do damage to property. If my properly installed TV antenna blows down in a windstorm and dents the neighbor’s car, am I responsible for the damage? The roofs at Aggie Village were properly installed and built to code, and there is no evidence that the university was negligent.
Sometimes things happen and no one is clearly at fault, like when a deer runs out in front of a car. This is why most people pay a little extra and buy comprehensive insurance. Those who don’t, risk suffering such losses on their own.
For a few cents a day, students could have purchased comprehensive insurance. In this situation, the university has the “deep pockets” and is an easy target for people who did not properly insure themselves.
