LETTER: Why take concert over gymnastics?

Editor,

I’d like some answers for why a country music concert is taking precedence over an already-scheduled Aggie gymnastics meet.

Friday, after witnessing another stellar performance by the Aggie gymnastics team, I noticed a sign posted on the Spectrum door. The Friday meet with Ohio State was moved to 11 a.m. Whose idea was this?

There were 2,300 people in attendance at the USU/BYU meet. With a power like Ohio State, there was sure to be another large crowd for the third-largest revenue-generating sport for USU. A meet at 11 a.m. prevents those who work during the day from attending. They’ll be lucky to have 100 in attendance. It also deprives the gymnasts of the home-court advantage.

After a little investigation, I found that the country music concert, scheduled only a month ago, was given priority over the USU/Ohio State gymnastics meet scheduled way back in October.

Moreover, USU athletes and teams, except gymnastics, were recognized during ASUSU’s Athletes Week. They were left out of the “Meet the Athletes” function, and originally, the talent event was held at the same time as the USU/Boise State gymnastics meet. So they couldn’t have attended anyway.

If this scheduling snafu had happened to the basketball team, you can bet basketball would have been given priority. Why isn’t the same deference given to the most consistently successful women’s team on campus? I wish the gymnastics team all the best. They deserve it.
