Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” postponed due to COVID-19
As of April 21, a “blackout” has officially been called on “In The Heights” release date.
“In The Heights” is a film adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda’s 2008 Tony-winning Broadway musical of the same name. Miranda’s pre-Hamilton hip hop rise to fame follows the lives of two Dominican-American couples trying to balance romance and dreams while making ends meet in New York City’s Washington Heights during a summer heatwave and blackout. The film, directed by “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu, was filmed on location during the summer of 2019 and starred “Hamilton” original Broadway cast member Anthony Ramos as the lead.
Anticipation for the film has been going on for months, with both Miranda and Ramos tweeting updates and behind the scenes of filming. In its day, the Broadway musical won four Tony Awards including best musical and best original score. The film proved just as promising after the first official trailer dropped on Dec. 12, 2019. Eager fans have been left disappointed, however, with the newest updates on the film’s post-production progress.
Originally set to hit theatres on June 26, 2020, it was announced in March it would be postponed to September due to the current COVID-19 pandemic preventing the use of movie theatres. This was overruled on April 21 when it was officially announced its release was pushed back even further to June 18, 2021.
In the meantime, the Broadway soundtrack can be streamed on Spotify, YouTube and Pandora.
