Local organizations vie for $680,000 grant from HUD

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has granted Logan City $680,000 to allocate as it sees fit.

The money, which was voluntarily given to Logan City without any requests, will most likely go to many non-profit and government organizations. At Tuesday night’s Municipal council meeting, 18 different groups stood to plead their cause as to why they should receive some of the funding.

The requests ranged from $3,000 to $100,000 and covered diverse groups, including Disabled American Veterans, Sunshine Terrace Nursing Home, and Common Ground, a non-profit organization that takes youth and adults with disabilities on outdoor adventure trips. Common Ground is located in the Whittier Community Center, has seven full-time staffers and numerous volunteers, and their office space is limited to 800 square feet. The group hopes to receive grants to help funding for a new building.

Each entity was given an application that will be reviewed by a committee, after which the committee will allocate the funds as it sees fit.

One issue discussed in Tuesday night’s meeting was an update on air quality in Cache Valley by Grant Koford of the Bear River Health Department. Koford stressed the need for reforms on emissions and idling cars after pollution levels in Cache Valley reached an all time high in January.
