Logan building catches fire

Marie Griffin

Police cars lined 900 North and 200 West the first hour of Friday morning as officers watched smoke rise above the roof of a Logan building.

JoDee Gessel was the only one inside the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, when its patio went up in flames.

Gessel’s colleague Brad Phillips was walking home and ran back to warn her when he noticed the fire. Gessel called 911.

The flames were only outside, she said. There was smoke inside.

“The flames were like 10 feet above the roof,” Gessel said.

Phillips burned his hand on the doorknob, trying to enter the building – the only injury of the incident.

“Brad Phillips is my hero,” Gessel said.

The Logan City Fire Department was on the scene to put out the fire. The cause of the episode and extent of damage were unknown.
