Logan’s Heroes famous by word of mouth

Kelli Palmer

An native of Iran and Utah State University alumnus, Hamid Salehi, opened his East Coast style sandwich shop, Logan’s Heroes, 17 years ago right here in Cache Valley.

He said it is known as “the best sandwich shop west of the Mississippi and east of the Pacific.”

Logan’s Heroes is located on 200 S. Main Street in Logan in a small, old corner café-style building.

Salehi came to America from Iran 30 years ago, residing in Cache Valley where he graduated from USU in accounting. While he was attending school he worked in a sandwich shop where he learned the art of sandwich making.

Salehi said accounting was too boring of a field so he decided to continue to make sandwiches.

It was a last minute decision, he said. He was broke and needed to make some money. He had no idea it would become so successful, he said.

The sandwiches Salehi makes have an Italian flavor, different than any other sandwich shop you can find in Cache Valley. He said they’re similar to East Coast style sandwiches. The reason they taste so good, he said, is due to the fresh meat, vegetables and bread he uses daily. Every morning he bakes the bread and every three hours he cuts new tomatoes to ensure freshness.

“Tomatoes can make or break a sandwich,” he said.

The menu consists of meat subs with just about anything a person could want on them. They generally run from $4.89-$5.22.

His specialty sandwiches, such as the Roger’s Special is a warm sandwich with roasted beef, roasted turkey and pastrami, costing $5.72. The Spicy Italian combo, that Salehi said is the public’s favorite has pepperoni, salami and ham and runs about $5.00. Each sandwich is 1 foot long and is served with a bag of Lays potato chips.

Salehi doesn’t just make sandwiches; he also serves swanky franks, gyros and pasta salad.

It isn’t just the good food that keeps people coming back, Salehi said, but the quality of customer service he provides. He makes sure he makes a friend to everyone who comes in and he tries to remember their names. He has regulars that come in and he knows exactly what they want, he said.

“Quality customer service and good food is what has made Logan’s Heroes so successful over the years,”

he said.

Salehi relies primarily on word of mouth advertisement for his shop.

“When people have a good experience they tell their friends and that’s how I’ve stayed in business for 17 years,” Salehi said.

Salehi claims his shop is known across the nation. He has one customer who comes in from California and stops by for a sandwich. Another has family in Michigan and when she visits them they request sandwiches from Logan’s Heroes.

“This is the best sandwich store in the state. My daughters even make me buy them sandwiches for their birthday,” Marty Smith, a Logan resident and Logan’s Heroes regular, said.

Salehi said he loves Logan and enjoys the people here.

“Every day is a challenge running your own business, but I enjoy it because I have made a lot of friends here,” he said.

Another regular to Logan’s Heroes, Todd Jorgenson said it is the best sandwich shop in the state.

“It tastes like an authentic sandwich, not slammed together like at Subway,” Jorgenson said.

However, Jorgenson said what he likes best is Salehi never forgets a customer.

Logan’s Heroes’ hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
