Lttle Aggies prepare for Halloween

Shane Krebs

Potential Aggies worked on paper pumpkins to transform them into puppets and Halloween stories were read during Halloween themed Little Aggie Activities Saturday.

Rachelle Holmes, an undeclared freshman, said the activities went well as they read last year’s favorite Halloween story, ‘Room on the Broom.’

After the stories, the participants colored pumpkins on a sheet of paper, cut them out and pasted them on brown paper bags to make pumpkins puppets.

“[A volunteer] made the pumpkins to put on the bags,” Holmes said. “Then we made pumpkin puppets and I found a ‘Pumpkin Song’ on the internet they could take.”

Melanie Finley, a resident of Nibley, said her friend informed her of the activities and her three children had a lot fun.

“It keeps the kids busy,” she said. “They all love to color and read stories – it gets them excited. We’ll definitely come again.”

Her 5-year-old son Xander said he wants to attend the activities again.

“Well I had a lot of fun,” he said. “[I colored] the pumpkin so I can make it into a puppet and you read about a lot of books.”

Xander said he usually likes to read about Superman and the Power Rangers and while he was coloring pumpkins he was thinking about what he wanted to be for Halloween.

“I want to be Spiderman,” he said. “I will have some fun and have candy.”

Three-year-old participant, Jasmine Paskett, wore a pumpkin shirt that looked like her mom’s and sister’s. She didn’t want to make a puppet, so she put her colored pumpkin inside her bag. Along with other participants, Pakett got a real pumpkin to take home.

“It’s a big pumpkin,” Paskett said. “But it’s not too heavy.

Holmes said the activities are geared toward getting families to be active together and showing children reading can be fun. She said those who do come will get 20 percent off children’s clothing and books throughout the school year.

“It’s always fun and everyone is welcome,” Holmes said. “This month the children had fun with the puppets; some even started wars with them.”

The Little Aggie Activities are sponsored by the Utah State University Bookstore and are held each month with a different theme. Next month the activity is on Nov. 20, with the theme “Pilgrims and Indians.”
