Make your own homemade salsa
With the current stay-home orders, daily routines can become boring. So, in between Zoom lectures take a break in the kitchen to make an easy, delicious snack.
One thing I love to make is salsa because it’s relatively easy with few ingredients. Here’s the recipe and a few tips for you to make it at home:
Easy Homemade Blender Salsa:
Ingredients:
- 2 12- fl oz cans of diced tomatoes
- ½ large yellow onion or 1 whole small yellow onion
- 1 large jalapeno
- 2 tablespoons cilantro
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon crushed red peppers
- 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
Wash your hands, cutting boards, knives and cooking area. Empty cans of tomatoes into blender. Chop onion and jalapeno into small cubes so that they will be easy to mix. Add to blender. Finely chop cilantro. Add to blender along with lemon juice, crushed red peppers and salt. Blend until well combined. Empty into bowl and place in the fridge to chill for at least one hour before serving with chips.
Tips:
- To make your salsa less watery, drain the liquid from the tomato cans before adding to the blender.
- To make your salsa more chunky, blend only half of the tomatoes, onion, and jalapeno, and then add the rest at the very end of blending so they’re not as finely chopped.
- Mix with a spoon before blending to make it more evenly blended.
- The longer you let the salsa cool in the fridge, the more flavorful it will be — let the flavors mix together.
- Play around! The flexibility of this recipe is what makes it great. If you want it to be spicier, add more jalapeno or crushed red pepper. If you want it to be chunkier, add more onions and tomatoes. Also, feel free to add other things such as green bell peppers.
Enjoy!
