Marriage

Marriage is the union of a man and woman – as many people just went to the polls to say so. Well, I disagree which leads to a lot of ‘chats’. Use of a religious text in argument is a concession that one is fighting a religious crusade, in turn they are avoided, and few arguments are really left.

I am constantly bombarded with the idea “that’s how it’s always been.” (Ironically, primarily from people whose former leaders were polygamists.) It’s easy to argue the statement iteself is invalid – however, the argument’s idea is fundamentally flawed. Change and firsts are good. Recall the firsts in our society – first woman elected to the supreme court, for instance. I do not believe the world would have been a better place if we’d had a constitutional amendment defining a supreme court justice as a man (simply because that is the way it had always been). I look forward to our first black or first woman president.

On the issue of adoption, there are the people with their statistics. Proof, that people raised by gays are more likely to have trouble in society, have lower test scores or . . . god forbid, are more likely to be gay themselves. Where do these numbers come from? Still, though, I’ll play along. The basis is that a minority not able to produce/rear the most adept children should not be allowed to have children. (Reminiscent of WWII Axis ideals, IIRC.) If this were a basis for not allowing gay marriage then similar initiatives would have to be implemented to ban minority marriage and marriage between couples at or below poverty level.

Like the basis of faith, people consider it empirical that homosexuality is bad – hence these non sequitur arguments appear (since you can’t argue a feeling). Hating gays is alright; but these people need to admit that their belief is really not much different than hating blacks/Jews etc. Yes – I have prejudices too, but I have never once considered them a basis for legislation – and frankly I am disgusted that this has been allowed to go this far.
