Media Coup
Dear Editor,
The recent Jared Westerbrook column describes the Terri Schiavo case as “dividing the country like only a recent presidential election can”. Actually, nearly three quarters of Americans sympathize with her husband and her right to die, much smaller than the 51% that President Bush garnered in the last election. Even with a large majority of Americans supporting her right to die, the “liberal media” is continually pandering to the protesters and vigil holders that were encamped outside her hospice. This is a major coup for these people. Where were the interviews with the anti-war leaders of the enormous protests before the invasion of Iraq? Why are these protesters given such heavy amounts of airtime when it is evident that most people don’t support their views? I don’t claim to answer for “liberal media”, but I do question why the religious right won an enormous battle in one families struggle with a personal matter, and in the meantime making an entire new batch of political fodder for the next election.
