Men, women lax fall to BYU

The Utah State University lacrosse team gave BYU all they could handle Saturday on the HPER field.

BYU won the game 13-5, but it was a much different game than those in the past.

Previously, the Cougars have easily handled the Aggies, but on Saturday the Aggies played a strong game, keeping the score close as late as the third quarter when it was 7-5.

Starting goalie Jake Morrison credits the defense for stepping up.

“Defensively we played outstanding,” Morrison said. “Jake Daniels and Matt Polityka really played strong all game.”

Morrison said BYU ran away with it in the fourth quarter because Utah State got tired and the Cougars played great offense.

“They have some real ace shooters,” Morrison said. “Those guys played really well in the fourth quarter.”

Morrison said the loss is not very disappointing because BYU is so good. He also said it is a good stepping stone as they head into their final regular season game against Boise State, who they lost to previously in the season, next week.

“We may have lost to them before, but this time it will be a whole different ball game,” Morrison said.

Like the men, the women’s lacrosse fell to BYU 11-7.

Earlier in the day, the Aggies defeated Weber State for the fourth time this season, 9-5, but it was the BYU game where Erica Peterson said the Aggies “had their best game of the season.”

“We started off bad against BYU, but we came back and by halftime it was 4-4,” Peterson said. “You could tell that the BYU coach was getting nervous.” Peterson, who had to watch the game from the sidelines because of illness, said the team played extremely well both on offense and defense.

Offensively, the Aggies were led by Kate Clafin, Kelsy Schneiter and Lindsay Hawkins, Peterson said.
