Men’s basketball team stands alone with longest win streak in the nation after victory over the Cowboys
With a final score of 83-59, the Utah State University’s men’s basketball team (15-1, 3-0 MW) beat the Wyoming Cowboys (8-8, 1-2 MW). After tonight’s game, the Aggies hold the longest win streak in the nation.
The theme for the stadium was Stripe the Spectrum. The snowstorm outside the stadium contributed to a slowly filled Spectrum at the beginning of the game, but total attendance exceeded 8,000.
Great Osobor and Darius Brown II worked the court together during the game.
“Me and Great have a great chemistry on and off the floor,” Brown said. “On the floor, I know where he’s going to be.”
Isaac Johnson drained a three for the first shot of the game for both teams.
Osobor landed a put-back dunk to send the crowd into a frenzy, the first of five dunks he had throughout the game.
Five minutes into the game, both teams had come out fighting. They were tied at the first timeout at 14 points apiece.
Josh Uduje entered from the bench, got a steal, and drew a shooting foul on the other end. He drained both shots.
Karson Templin also came off the bench for a steal and made two free throws.
The bench kept the momentum going for the Aggies with eleven minutes left in the first half.
Two turnovers caused by the Aggies forced Wyoming coach Jeff L
inder to call a timeout.
With a timeout called by the Aggies at 7:59 left in the first, neither team had scored in two minutes.
The crowd chanted “Rent is due” in reference to head coach Danny Sprinkle’s coaching style to his team.
Kalifa Sakho received an alley-oop lob from Brown and dunked it hard to send the crowd squealing.
After a missed shot, the HURD yelled “Airball” at Kobe Newton from the Cowboys during the entire media timeout.
At the half, the Aggies were 11.1% from the three while the Cowboys were 36.4%.
Osobor slammed two dunks in a row, which forced Linder to call another timeout. The Aggie fans couldn’t get enough of it.
The Aggies went on a run for the first part of the second half, outscoring the Cowboys 20-6. This brought the score to 55-39.
The Cowboys used a zone defense while the Aggies went man-to-man. The Cowboys then switched to a man defense, but couldn’t stop the Aggies.
USU entered their secondary squad with 2:55 left in the second half. The score was 76-56.
The crowd chanted “Hey, hey, hey, goodbye” with the time expiring at the end of the game.
After the game, Brown talked about stagnation in the first half.
“We just started off a little too slow,” he said.
Then he spoke about what happened in the locker room at the half.
“Before the coaches even came in, we knew what we needed to do,” Brown said.
Sprinkle also spoke on the slow first half, noting its implications for their upcoming matchup against the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
“I thought we were settling. I thought we were a little soft,” he said. “This game is not going to help us beat UNLV.”
After a string of home-court victories, the Aggies will travel south to play the UNLV Rebels this Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m.
