Men’s lacrosse splits games in Colorado

After losing 14-6 Friday night to a tough Fort Lewis team, the Utah State University men’s lacrosse club turned to familiar hero Tyler Berkey as it beat the Colorado School of Mines on Saturday 14-11.

Against Fort Lewis, coach Jeremy Miller said the team lost because of Fort Lewis’ experience, organization and their talent. The Aggies were also without players that are out because of injury, and others who weren’t able to make the long trip to Colorado for other reasons.

“We were about tied at halftime,” Miller said. “But in the second half, their experience took over and they just ran away with it.”

Following USU’s victory over the Colorado School of Mines, Miller said he was confident the Aggies will finish the season with a bang.

“I don’t think we will lose another game this season,” Miller said. “As far as winning our division [Division II], I had been worried about the School of Mines a little bit because I had never seen them play. But now that we have beaten them I think we’ve got it.”

Backup goalie Ben Cole saw his first substantial action of the season by playing the entire second half of the Mines game. Miller said Cole played really well and was supported by a balanced defensive effort from the rest of the team.

“Everyone played really great in both games,” Miller said. “These two games really showed us what we can do as a team, especially offensively.”

USU will return to action April 5 and 6 when it travels to Gunninson, Colo. to take on Western State University and the University of Southern Colorado.
