Men’s lacrosse to battle UVSC at home

Fresh off of a victory over Boise State, the Utah State men’s lacrosse club is facing Utah Valley State College Saturday at 1 p.m. on Tower Field.

In the previous meeting between the two teams, a season ago, UVSC gave the Aggies one of their few losses in region play, but over the years, both teams have been swapping victories, said USU Head Coach Eddie Vega.

These back-and-forth games is something Vega said he expects to continue as both teams are fairly well matched. UVSC comes into Saturday’s game with a division record of 3-0, while the Aggies are standing at 3-1 in the division.

But in the area of sheer skill, Vega said UVSC has the advantage.

“For the most part, UVSC has more skill than us, but we have more players than they do, more legs, so it evens out,” he said.

Another aspect of the game the Aggies have on their side is their physical play. USU holds pride in being one of the most physical teams in the division.

When the Aggies’ opponents are more skillful than they are, showing forth their physical abilities can greatly influence the outcome of the game, Vega said.

But aside from the physical aspect of the game, he said, if Utah State plays its game, it should be able to come out on top.

“We just need to play a controlled game, getting plenty of possession,” Vega said. “We need to keep the game rolling in our favor and stop them when they get on a run, so they can’t get any momentum.”

This is the Aggies’ second to last weekend at home, and Vega said he believes Saturday’s game should be fun to watch, especially with the players looking forward to playing so much.
